Chateau Corbin sits on the northwestern edge of Saint-Emilion, close enough to the Pomerol line that you could practically wave across it. That location does real work: the sand-and-clay soils there, rich in iron, give wines the plush, rounded texture Pomerol built its reputation on. Corbin has been a Grand Cru Classe since the original 1955 classification, and it has been run since 1999 by Anabelle Cruse, the fourth generation of her family on the property. The blend is Merlot-dominant with Cabernet Franc alongside, and 2019 was a generous Right Bank vintage with ripe fruit and ripe tannins and no hard edges anywhere. Expect black cherry, plum, cocoa and a little iron-tinged earth. Good with air now, and better still in a few years.

"The 2019 Corbin has come together beautifully with Γ©levage. Succulent black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather and licorice all flesh out, giving this succulent Saint-Γ‰milion tons of energy and sheer appeal. Attractive floral and savory accents linger on the close."

"Whether I landed on an off bottle or simply misunderstood the wine when I tasted it a few months ago is unclear, but what is certain is that I misjudged the 2019 Corbin. Offering up inviting aromas of plums, raspberries, violets, vine smoke and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with velvety tannins, succulent acids and an elegant, complete profile. This beautiful wine includes some 15% Cabernet Franc." β€”William Kelley

"A slightly richer style of Corbin than we have seen in some recent vintages but it is entirely successful. Plum and blueberry flavours, well balanced with a juicy frame and mouthwatering finish. 40% new oak."

Wine Spectator

89 points

"Features a core of cassis and plum compote that's rich and caressing in feel, while red licorice and singed apple wood notes are inlaid nicely throughout. Solid, if a touch shy on purity in the end. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes."

Wine Enthusiast

"Ripe fruit and juicy acidity have come together in this dense wine. The tannins and the weight are an important part of its make up, giving richness and ripe fruit flavors."

More about Chateau Corbin

Saint-Emilion has some of the finest terroir in France. The magic combination of sunny, maritime climate and cool clay-and-limestone soils is perfect for merlot, and has made Cheval Blanc and Ausone two of the most exalted wines in the world. But they're incredibly expensive, too!

Fortunately, the fabulous terroir isn't exclusive to these estates; Saint-Emilion happens to be the largest AOC in Bordeaux. This means you can find some remarkable values, if you know where to look.

One key to finding great Saint-Emilion is looking for Chateaux on the limestone plateau, around the town itself. When you head down from the plateau, the soils become sandier and the wines (generally speaking) lighter and less structured. There are plenty of good wines down there, of course. But the plateau is where you find Cheval Blanc and Ausone, and other Right Bank superstars like Figeac, Pavie, and Tertre Roteboeuf.

It's also where you find Chateau Corbin, one of our favorite authentically delicious Saint Emilions – and one that's far less expensive too!

Corbin, a Cru ClassΓ© with 15th century roots, is classically beautiful and terroir-expressive. And what terroir: it's also only about 1 kilometer from Cheval Blanc! Corbin doesn't cover up what they've got by working in the overblown, syrupy style that was trendy a decade ago. This is an elegant, even timeless, wine that expresses that limestone magic through merlot deliciousness.
