Wine Spectator

92 points

"Elegant and bright, with lemon zest and crunchy melon, plus a spicy kick of ground ginger. Thanks to its structure and energy, this is bone dry and firm on the briny, salty finish, where heather and dried herbs add detail. Drink now through 2033."

More about Chateau de Plaisance

On the Butte de Chaume, a hill above the Layon famous for sweet Chenin Blanc, Château de Plaisance has long been the house that insisted on dry wine. That stubborn streak is now in the hands of Vanessa Cherruau, one of the most exciting new names in Anjou.

For decades the estate belonged to the Rochais family, and Guy Rochais was an iconoclast who made a dry white from Chaume long before it was fashionable. When he tried to sell it as "Chaume Sec," the authorities objected, so he renamed it L'Insolent and bottled it as plain Anjou. Rather than let the property go to the local cooperative, Cherruau, who trained in Angers and spent twelve years in the wine trade, persuaded the family to sell to her, and her first vintage was 2019.

The 25 hectares sit mostly around the château, on schist slopes. They have been farmed organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2008, and Cherruau has kept it that way. Because the Chaume name is reserved for sweet wine, the dry Chenin from the hill goes out as Anjou Blanc, under names like Ronceray and La Grande Pièce, alongside a Savennières, an Anjou Rouge and a Brut Nature Crémant. Expect bone-dry, precise Chenin with real stony depth.
