It's rare to find a First Growth Sauternes with more than three decades in bottle, and this 1990 Guiraud is one. Guiraud was ranked Premier Cru in the 1855 classification. The house builds its style on two things: a terroir of sand, gravel and clay, and an unusually high share of Sauvignon Blanc alongside Semillon, about 35% of the vineyard today, where most neighbors lean much harder on Semillon. More recently it has become a standard-bearer for careful farming, championing biodiversity from 1996 and becoming the first Premier Grand Cru Classé certified organic, in 2011. Both of those came after this wine was made, so this bottle shows Guiraud from an earlier chapter. Great Sauternes is one of the few wines built to go this kind of distance, and a back-vintage bottle like this lets you see what time does to it without cellaring it yourself for thirty years. It's worth opening for a proper occasion, though it doesn't need one.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of mature, Semillon-based Sauternes: deep gold in the glass, with botrytis-driven aromas of apricot, candied orange peel and honey, plus the saffron, caramel and nutty notes that long bottle age typically brings. The palate is usually rich and luscious, its sweetness kept lively by fresh acidity, finishing long and honeyed.
