Château Lafon-Rochet is an 1855 Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru Classé) in Saint-Estèphe—one of only five classified growths in the appellation. Origins date to the 16th century; renamed "Lafon-Rochet" in 1650 following the marriage of Antoinette de Guillemotes to Etienne de Lafon. The Tesseron family (Cognac producers) acquired it in the 1960s and undertook major restorations. Guy Tesseron built a new château—the only 1855 Classified Growth with a château constructed in the 20th century. The estate farms 41-45 hectares with some plots over 80 years old. The 2000 vintage: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, aged 16-18 months in 50% new French oak.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2000 Lafon-Rochet is a vintage that I have not encountered for many years. Now showing some bricking on the rim, it has quite an exotic bouquet with maraschino cherry, strawberry, balsamic and brown spices, nicely defined and holding up well. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, with grainy tannins. Maybe a little dryness is beginning to creep in, yet there is a fine grip and a long tobacco finish. Tasted at the Lafon-Rochet vertical at the property." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

90 points

"One of the better wines (and also reasonably priced) to emerge from this property over recent years, this dense ruby/purple-colored wine shows a complex nose of earth, underbrush, creosote, creme de cassis, and dried herbs. Sporting a new yellow/orange label that matches the dramatic paint job on the chateau itself, the wine has a deep ruby/purple color, medium to full body, fine ripeness as well as purity, and moderate tannin in the finish." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

"57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. All made in inox . Still deep crimson. Lots of evolution on the nose. Quite chunky and stony and very St-Estephe. Correct and upright. Still going strong. Lots of chunky tannin."

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Concentrated wine. Intense aromas of grilled meat, spice and plum skin. Full-bodied, with big silky tannins and lots of fruit. Long and chewy."

More about Chateau Lafon-Rochet

The Lorenzetti family acquired this Saint-Estèphe jewel in 2021, bringing fresh energy to a classified growth that had slipped from prominence. They're rebuilding meticulously—restoring vineyard health, refining winemaking. Early signs suggest Lafon-Rochet is on its way back to its 1855 glory.
