Blason de l'Evangile is the friendliest way into one of Pomerol's great addresses. L'Evangile sits on the southeastern edge of the plateau, with Pétrus on its northern border and only a secondary road between it and Cheval Blanc. This second wine is more than the Grand Vin's leftovers, because the grapes come from different ground. Blason is grown on clay-sand and silty-sand slopes over a clay subsoil, lighter soils where roots go deeper and find water more steadily. The Grand Vin comes from heavy green clay under a bed of gravel. Blason spends less time in barrel, and the producer's own advice is to drink it young, which is a relief if you'd rather not wait fifteen years for a Pomerol to come around. Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Lafite, bought L'Evangile in 1990, and it was the first of their estates to farm organically. It has been certified organic since 2021.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Blason de L'Évangile is a rich, boisterous second wine. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, incense and chocolate are all dialed up. Supple curves give the Blason its sumptuous, extroverted personality. There's a lot of wine here. The 2023 will drink beautifully right out of the gate." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Blason de l'Evangile is open and giving, bursting with aromas of sweet cherries, plums, licorice and orange zest. Medium-bodied, fleshy and charming, it will drink well on release." —William Kelley

"95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Round and fresh with crunchy fruit. Light, sandy tannins. An early drinker." —James Lawther MW

"Gorgeous aromatics, perfumed and lively, really scented and lifted on the nose - dark chocolate and blackcurrant. Bright and punchy, but soft and generous too, a gravel minerality to the tannins which give the structure and coats the mouth in a fine layer of powdery, chalkiness. It’s soft and caressing, not too high in acidity at all, the tannins quite present but a nice enveloping of the mouth. Smooth and suave, but not too firm. I like the balance here, soft hints of herbal Cabernet mint and liquorice leave a lasting impression. A touch spicy on the finish but this is really charming in a gentle and calm way. Great stuff. Acidity doesn't stick out, more a Left Bank style, still with tension in the middle - it has a backbone and keeps the focus but with a gentle expansion. Ageing 20% concrete tanks, 15% new oak. 3.8pH."

More about Chateau L'Evangile

L'Evangile sits where Pomerol's great names crowd together: next door to La Conseillante, a short walk from Petrus, and separated from Cheval Blanc and Saint-Émilion by little more than a dirt track. That address goes a long way toward explaining a wine that manages to be both opulent and refined.

The estate is one of the oldest in Pomerol, known as Fazilleau before it took the name L'Evangile. Jean-Paul Chaperon gave it its present name in 1862 and later built the château, and it later passed to the Ducasse family, whose formidable Simone Ducasse ran it from the early 1980s. In 1990 she sold a controlling stake to the Rothschilds of Château Lafite, who bought the rest in 1999 and built new gravity-fed cellars in time for the 2005 vintage.

Today there are 22 hectares on a patchwork of iron-streaked blue clay at the top of the plateau, with gravel and sand lower down toward Cheval Blanc. The vineyard is roughly four-fifths Merlot and one-fifth Cabernet Franc, farmed organically and certified since 2021. Parcels are fermented separately in concrete and the grand vin spends about 18 months, mostly in new French oak with some clay amphorae. The second wine, Blason de l'Evangile, draws largely on the sandier plots and younger vines. Expect dark plum and black fruit, a floral lift and silky, generous tannins.

Tasting Profile

Expect the plush, approachable side of Pomerol: ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry from the Merlot, with Cabernet Franc adding a lift of violet and a leafy, graphite freshness. Typically medium- to full-bodied with supple, rounded tannins and a light touch of oak spice, finishing smooth and savoury, made for drinking young rather than long cellaring.
