A Saint-Estèphe that has been on a quiet rise since the Lorenzetti family (also of Pédesclaux and partial Issan) acquired the property in 2008. In 2020 Lilian Ladouys was classified Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel — the top tier of the Cru Bourgeois hierarchy — but the 2016, while bottled before that classification, drinks every bit as if it had been. The vintage was a classical Bordeaux: structured, polished, and built for the long haul. The blend leans Merlot (62%) with Cabernet Sauvignon (32%) and Petit Verdot (6%), giving a rich, velvety Saint-Estèphe with cassis and blueberry, dried herbs, violets, ripe tannins, and refined oak. Fifteen months in barrel (30% new). Now beautifully in window with another decade-plus of life ahead.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Lilian Ladouys is just as beautiful from bottle as it was from barrel. Lifted, silky and exceptionally perfumed, the 2016 has so much to offer. Bright red toned fruits laced with expressive floral top notes run through this sensual, totally gracious Saint-Estèphe. There is so much to like. Lilian Ladouys is a rare Saint-Estèphe where Merlot takes precedence over Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted two times." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Lilian Ladouys is a blend of 62% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot aged in 30% new French oak for 15 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it sings of baked plums, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake with bay leaves, pencil lead and menthol. Medium-bodied, elegant and packed with vibrant flavor layers, it finishes long." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Made by the same team as at Château Pedesclaux, this Cru Bourgeois was promoted to Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2020, reflecting all the improvements at the property. The 2016 and the 2018 are on par for quality, but the blend for 2016 emphasises Merlot (62%), along with 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, while 2018 is Cabernet dominant. The 2016 was harvested from Oct 3 to 17, and the wine spent 15 months in barrels, 30% new. It's generous and even opulent, with expansive aromas of cassis, sensuous red fruit tones to the flavour, silky textures, and really a lush, lifted finish. The character shifts slightly with the 2018, after the Lorenzetti family incorporated vineyards from two neighbouring estates with similar gravelly soils."

Wine Spectator

"Juicy, with a lively streak of anise running through the middle of the plum and bitter cherry core. The finish has solid, fresh grip."

Wine Enthusiast

"Now under the same ownership as vastly improved Château Pedesclaux in Pauillac, this estate is also on the upward quality curve. This wine has the structure and tannins of a classic Saint-Estèphe as well as juicy, rich black fruits."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Classical Saint-Estèphe at the dinner table. Pour with grilled ribeye, roast leg of lamb, duck confit, braised short ribs, mushroom-rich beef stews, or aged hard cheeses. A great match for hearty winter cooking and holiday roasts.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby. Cassis, blueberry, violets, and dried herbs lift from the glass. The palate is generous and velvety — Merlot-led plushness framed by Cabernet structure and Petit Verdot lift. Ripe tannins, refined barrel spice (15 months, 30% new). Long, silky, classical finish.
