A full-bodied 2005 Saint-Estèphe from a château that put winemaking at the very center of the house. The cellar and vat room are built into the château itself, rather than hidden behind a showpiece mansion. That practical streak goes back to the founder, Bernard O'Phelan, a young Irish wine merchant who left Tipperary for Bordeaux at the end of the 18th century and bought his first Saint-Estèphe vines in 1805. His son Frank later served as the village's mayor for thirty years. The estate looks out over the Gironde estuary from gravel and clay soils, and the house describes its style as elegant, fine and balanced: Saint-Estèphe with polish, not bluster. This vintage was made by the Gardinier family, who ran the property for more than thirty years before handing it to Philippe Van de Vyvere. If you want a serious Left Bank blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc that's already been in bottle for years, this is a smart, grounded choice that delivers far more than its name might suggest.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"Bright, full ruby. Violet, blackberry and licorice on the nose. Bright, juicy and focused, with very good density and purity of black fruit flavors. Finishes with fairly full, slightly drying tannins but has the strength of material to support its solid structure. Should develop slowly. A good showing today." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

88 points

"One of the stronger efforts in St.-Estèphe in 2005, this Phélan-Sègur exhibits good depth of fruit, including mulberry, black and red currants, earth and spice. It is medium-bodied, with sweet tannin and excellent concentration. Drink it over the next 12-15 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"A spicy, smoky, wood-dominated wine, which loses its fruit in all these exotic flavors. There is a dark core that will round out and spread the fruit through what should be an impressive wine." —Roger Voss

More about Chateau Phelan-Segur

Phélan Ségur's vines are intermingled with those of Montrose and Calon-Ségur, two of the most famous names in Saint-Estèphe, and over the past decade or so the wine has been moving steadily closer to their league.

It's an Irish story. Bernard O'Phelan, a young Irishman who settled in Bordeaux and married into the Guestier merchant family, bought Clos de Garramey in 1805 and the Ségur de Cabanac estate in 1810 and merged them. His son Frank inherited in 1841, and the name Phélan Ségur took hold in the early twentieth century. The Gardinier family bought the estate in 1985 and restored both château and vineyard, and in the late 2010s it passed to the Belgian businessman Philippe Van de Vyvere. Véronique Dausse has been technical director since 2010.

The vines grow on a thick layer of river gravel, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot recently added to the mix. The vineyard is plowed rather than weeded with chemicals, the malolactic happens in barrel, and the wine is aged about 18 months, half of it in new oak. The second wine, Frank Phélan, is named for the founder's son.

Expect Saint-Estèphe on the elegant side: cassis, graphite and violets over polished tannins, with more energy in recent vintages and the structure to age.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saint-Estèphe profile: blackcurrant and black cherry with cedar, graphite and a savoury, earthy edge. Typically full-bodied but polished rather than brawny, with firm, fine-grained Cabernet tannins, fresh acidity and a long, dry finish. Think traditional Left Bank claret, a little more structured and less plush than a Merlot-led Right Bank wine.
