Prieure-Lichine gives you a portrait of what Margaux actually is, and 2009 was the vintage when consultant Christophe Derenoncourt began overseeing the winemaking here. This 2009 also has more than a decade in bottle, which makes it a chance to see that portrait with some age on it, something young releases can't show you. The estate started life as the priory of Cantenac, founded by monks in the 12th century and held by the Church until the French Revolution. Alexis Lichine took it over in 1951, added his name two years later, bought more vineyard plots and modernised the cellars. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot lead the blend. The result is a medium-bodied, elegant red rather than a blockbuster: claret for people who like their Bordeaux with a sense of place.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2009 Prieuré-Lichine was one of the pleasant surprises of this blind tasting, a Margaux that has improved in recent years. It has a superb, very Pauillac bouquet with graphite infused black fruit that is very well defined and neatly integrated with the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, very well balanced with quite saline and very persistent finish. Superb. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

93 points

"The soft, sexy 2009 exhibits a dense plum/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of raspberries, black cherries, black currants, smoke and forest floor. Opulent and round with an attractive viscosity as well as outstanding purity, depth and length, it should drink well for two decades. While not one of the longest lived wines of the vintage, it is among the most precocious, flattering and charming at present." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

"Very pale rim. Sweet, heady nose. Very sweet start on the palate and perhaps not quite enough refreshment factor? Tannins slightly rustic but there is lots of pleasure here." —Jancis Robinson MW

Decanter

90 points

"Very good concentration and depth of fruit, with a hint of violets behind. A touch soft on the palate – very concentrated and chocolatey – yet neither too heavy nor too extracted. A big wine for Margaux, but has freshness and flair."

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Offers a core of blackberry and roasted plum in reserve, while slightly taut singed cedar, vanilla bean and espresso notes lead the way for now. Yet this leans on the toast rather than purity, with a cocoa note framing the finish. Should hang well enough in the cellar."

More about Chateau Prieure-Lichine

Prieuré-Lichine is the jigsaw puzzle of Margaux: its vines are scattered across roughly 150 parcels in all five of the appellation's communes, which no other Margaux estate can claim. The wine is a cross-section of the whole appellation.

The name tells the story. This was once the priory of Cantenac, whose monks made wine here for centuries; a growth called Prieuré is on record by 1444. By the middle of the twentieth century mildew, phylloxera and the Depression had shrunk the vineyard to a few hectares. Then in 1951 Alexis Lichine, the Russian-born wine merchant and writer, bought it, added his name in 1953 and spent the rest of his life rebuilding it. He died at the château in 1989, and ten years later his family sold it to the Ballande group.

Today the estate covers around 75 hectares of Garonne gravel over clay, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in roughly equal measure with a little Petit Verdot, and certified HVE for its environmental practices. Each parcel is vinified separately, largely in tulip-shaped concrete vats, before aging in French oak with Stéphane Derenoncourt consulting. The house style is Margaux at its most charming: perfumed, supple and silky, with enough structure to age gracefully for a couple of decades.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast rack of lamb with rosemary, duck breast with cherries, steak frites, or a wild mushroom and thyme tart. Also good with aged Comté or a hard sheep's-milk cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Margaux profile: blackcurrant and red plum from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with violet, cedar and graphite on the nose. It's medium-bodied and elegant rather than heavy, with fine, polished tannins and fresh acidity. With bottle age, wines in this style usually pick up tobacco, leather and forest-floor notes before a long, savoury, dry finish.
