The 2021 Pianrosso shows the riper, more concentrated side of Sangiovese, a style reinforced by a naturally powerful site and a warm, sunny growing season that pushed alcohol to 15.5%. The Pianrosso vineyard runs to just under 12 hectares of Eocene marl-rich soils between 240 and 360 meters, down in the warmer Castelnuovo dell'Abate corner south of Montalcino, and it gives this wine its depth and its distinctive character. The wine ages roughly 36 months in Slavonian oak, followed by more than eight months of refinement in bottle. Aromas are intense and fruit-forward, with spice and ripe red berries, moving to a warm, soft and harmonious palate where pronounced tannins are balanced by fresh acidity. Give it an hour in a decanter if you are drinking it now.

Robert Parker

"Dark and richly textured, this expression opens with ripe fruit nuances, sweet plum and baking spice. The Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso is unapologetic about ripeness and the more concentrated side of Sangiovese, a style reinforced by the warm growing conditions of the vintage and the naturally powerful Pianrosso site. There is so much richness and phenolic texture here that it recalls warm years such as 2017 or 2019. The tannins are soft, the alcohol is high at 15.5%, and production stands at 43,000 bottles, including larger formats." —Monica Larner

"Aromas of new leather, spiced black plum, violet and camphor unfold on the bold and beautiful 2021 Brunello Pianrosso. Combining power and restraint, the full-bodied palate delivers layers of ripe Morello cherry, raspberry jam, licorice and fine tobacco blend before a spiced orange zest close. Velvety, enveloping tannins provide seamless support. Drink 2029–2041." —Kerin O'Keefe
