Classic Beaujolais from a Juliénas legend, fresh out of the gate. Domaine du Clos du Fief is the fourth-generation Tête family estate in Juliénas — Michel Tête, joined by son Sylvain, is widely considered one of the cru's most reliable hands. La Roche is their Beaujolais-Villages cuvée, 100% Gamay from 50-plus-year-old vines on Les Côtes de la Roche, just west of the Juliénas commune in the hamlet of Jullié, planted on the distinctive blue volcanic stone (diorite) that gives this corner of the Beaujolais its serious mineral spine. Traditional semi-carbonic vinification, no makeup, all juicy fruit and granite snap. The 2024 is a bright, gulpable expression — exactly the kind of unpretentious, food-friendly Beaujolais we never stop drinking.

More about Clos du Fief (Michel Tete)

Michel Tête is widely considered to be the best producer of wines from the Beaujolais Cru known as Juliénas. As tempting as it may be stick with your known favorites -- Foillard, Lapierre, Coudert -- Tête offers a slightly different twist on Cru Beaujolais.

Like those other masters, Tete has very old vines -- for this wine they are about 50 years old. He also makes the wines traditionally and with very little intervention in the winery. The differences come from the soils, as Tete is the only one in this group to boast blue volcanic soils under his vines.

These things make a difference. Those soils seem to intensify the wine's aromatics and structure.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Charcuterie boards, roast chicken, juicy burgers, mushroom pizza, lentil stew, pork sausages, or a wedge of soft-rind cheese. Lightly chilled, it's a brilliant Tuesday-night red.

Light- to medium-bodied and juicy. Red cherry, raspberry, violet, a dusting of black pepper and a granitic mineral snap. Soft tannin, brisk acidity, refreshing finish.
