Domaine du Clos Naudin was founded in 1923 and is now run by Vincent Foreau, who took over from his father Philippe in 2016. The estate is tiny at 11.5 hectares, centered on a single exceptional site called Le Mont. The 2020 Sec is bone-dry but far from minimal: it is layered, tightly wound, and shaped by the limestone-rich soils of Vouvray. When Foreau issues a Sec, residual sugar is between 1 and 2 grams but never exceeding 6 grams; the vibrant acidity makes the wine taste scintillatingly dry despite considerable body and honeyed texture. The wine ages eight months in 300-liter barrels at 12.5 percent alcohol, emerging with the focus and complexity that only true limestone terroir and careful winemaking can produce.

More about Clos Naudin (Foreau)

Foreau’s Clos Naudin sits, together with Domaine Huet, at Vouvray’s pinnacle. Huet is small (35 hectares), but Foreau is tiny (11.5 ha), and centered on the single, exceptional site of Le Mont.

Part of what makes Vouvray special is that, under the right circumstances, it can produce a complete range of wines, from the super-dry to the outrageously sweet. There’s a perfect expression of the terroir for every occasion. But Foreau only makes the wines that are right for the character of the vintage. Some years, no dry wines; some years, no sweet wines.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

When Foreau issues a “Sec” (and the decision to do so relates entirely to the vintage conditions and the composition of the grapes at harvest), the wine can carry from 1 to 2 grams of residual sugar but never more than 6 grams. Because of the vibrant acidity that accompanies these wines, the sensation one experiences is of drinking a scintillatingly dry wine, although one with considerable body and a honeyed texture. We tend to have several vintages available at all times so that our clients can have the option of enjoying the Vouvray Sec in its youth but also with several years of bottle age.
