From one of the Loire's most legendary estates, in a lovely back-vintage window. Clos Rougeard, near Chace in Saumur-Champigny, treats Cabernet Franc as a serious vin de garde, fermenting in old cement vats and aging in barrel. Les Poyeux comes off older vines on a gentle south-facing slope of eroded sandstone over tuffeau in Chacé, one of the estate's great single-vineyard cuvées. The 2011 was a moderate, earlier-drinking vintage, so this is approachable and expressive now rather than one for long cellaring. A rare opportunity to drink Loire history at its sweet spot.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Deep ruby. Lovely lift to the gamey aromas of blackberry, violet and wild flowers. Discreetly sweet, layered and seamless, showing perfectly integrated acidity and a chalky quality to the vibrant tannins. Juicy, vinous, intense and delicately suave, this distinguished cabernet franc finishes with subdued cassis fruit, subtle spices and superb length, reminding Nady of the 1993." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2011 Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux is dressed in a dark and dense red color. Very pure, intense, ripe, concentrated and almost bloody, as well as leathery on the nose where black olives, licorice, black cherries and wild berries, including raspberries, are exhibited. The wine starts silky and elegant and develops a crescendo of intense, concentrated and sweet aromas of black fruits, raspberries and cigar box. The tannins are matured and elegant, the finish intense and refined by a severe woody note. This is no big or over-concentrated Cabernet Franc, but it is very well balanced and accessible early as was the 2006." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Clos Rougeard

here are some very famous wines that are extremely limited and inspire a cult like following; and then there is Clos Rougeard. The tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and even tinier amounts of Chenin Blanc that the Foucault brothers make in Saumur-Champigny are among the most rare and sought after bottles in France and now the U.S.

What's the trick? Well it's a bit mysterious but basically they possess very old vines on special terroir. Their yields are tiny, farming is meticulous and the cellar is deep, dank and cold. Those few of us luck enough to visit can attest to layers of mold and caverns of oak barrels with various vintages slowly fermenting or resting for years before bottling.

The wines are stunning. They can age probably forever. And they are extremely limited.
