Cointreau has been produced in France since 1849 and remains a benchmark for triple sec, a style of orange liqueur made from the peel of bitter and sweet oranges. Unlike many sugary orange liqueurs, Cointreau is crystal clear, relatively dry, and bottled at 40% ABV, giving it both aromatic punch and mixological flexibility.

In 1885, Édouard-Jean Cointreau nailed the balance that nobody else had figured out—a triple sec that was crystalline, three times more concentrated in flavor, and less cloyingly sweet than everything else on the shelf. He created an entire category. The brothers called it Cointreau to differentiate from the generic triple sec label. A century-plus later, Cointreau still tastes like the original insight.
