This is a rare chance to see what time does to a wine its own maker usually tells you to drink young: Anne Gros's Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau from 2005, now two decades on. The domaine says this is often its most approachable Chambolle because of its lower acidity, and generally suggests opening it between two and ten years old. That puts this bottle well past the window, and we'd be lying if we called it a sure thing. For a curious Burgundy drinker, though, it's a fascinating one. The parcel sits in the lieu-dit (named locality) of the Combe d'Orveau, at the southern edge where Chambolle meets Vosne-Romanée, on very stony soil full of fine scree over white marl. The name comes from "Val d'Or," the small golden vale. It's village Chambolle rather than Premier Cru, and the family history is the real draw: Louis Gros left the vines to his son François in 1951, and François's daughter Anne took over the estate in 1988. Stand it up for a day, pour gently and go in with an open mind.

"Medium red. Ripe red fruits and mocha on the nose. Supple and ripe, showing more breadth but less cut than the young 2006. But this is currently a bit clenched on the back half, with the coolness of this rocky site giving it a restrained, taut character. I'd hold this for a few years." —Stephen Tanzer

"Anne Gros’s generally light touch with extraction would seem to fit the nature of a thick-skinned vintage like 2005, and there is no question she has captured an element of delicacy in her 2005 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau (from high above Clos Vougeot) that is rare for the vintage. Red cherry, rhubarb, cinnamon and lily-like florality in the nose lead to a polished, silky, bright, juicy, pure-fruited palate with persistent inner-mouth florality and hints of truffle. Meat and minerals enter on the long finish, which offers bloody, chalky and saline hints mingled with ripe but slightly tart red fruits. While this will have most appeal for tasters who like a little kick of acidity in their Pinot, the tannins are scarcely noticeable and the wine perfect for early drinking, indeed the most immediately charming wine in this year’s collection and my favorite Anne Gros Chambolle yet." —David Schildknecht

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken or guinea fowl with morels or chanterelles; roast duck breast with a light jus; rare roast beef; mild cheeses such as young Comté or Chaource.

Tasting Profile

Expect the delicate, perfumed side of Chambolle-Musigny: redcurrant and raspberry lifted by violet and spring-flower aromas, with the pale ruby colour typical of this light, stony soil. Typically light to medium-bodied, with softer acidity than the domaine's other Chambolles and fine, gentle tannins, finishing silky and fragrant. Think elegant rather than powerful red Burgundy.
