Romano Dal Forno does not make Valpolicella the way anyone else makes Valpolicella. From his Monte Lodoletta vineyard he farms Corvina and friends to obsessive yields, dries the fruit for about six weeks before fermentation, a shorter appassimento than he gives his Amarone, and then ages the wine for years in barrel. The result has always been enormous, dark and dense, closer in spirit to Amarone than to the light red Valpolicella most people picture. This 2004 comes to us from a private cellar with two decades of age on it, which is when these wines finally start to unwind. It is still going to be a big wine. Give it a long decant and a serious meal. This is a bottle for a night that deserves one.

Antonio Galloni

"Sweet, open aromatics lead to hints of dark blueberries, blackberries, spices and minerals as the 2004 Valpolicella Superiore gradually opens in the glass. Today the wine comes across as shut down, but the imposing tannins are also rather fine, suggesting that with time the wine's inner sweetness will gradually emerge. Readers who want to try their luck with this wine earlier should open the bottle a good eight hours or so prior to drinking it." —Antonio Galloni

"Thick, black and impenetrable, this is one of the most densely extracted wines you will ever encounter. Despite its extreme size, it maintains a fresh, delicate character throughout thanks to the obvious quality of the fruit. Opulent oak and spice tones might be distracting to Valpolicella purists—but make no mistake: this is an impressive and exciting wine."

More about Dal Forno Romano

Romano Dal Forno does not make Valpolicella the way anyone else does, and that is precisely the point. Working outside the Classico heartland, in the Val d'Illasi east of Verona, he set out to prove that this "lesser" valley could produce some of the most concentrated, age-worthy reds in Italy. It did.

Romano started bottling his own wine in 1983, frustrated by the low prices his family's grapes fetched, and with encouragement from the great Giuseppe Quintarelli. Everything since has been about extremes. Vines are planted at densities of up to 12,800 per hectare and cropped hard. Grapes are dried in vast rooms where fans run around the clock, for about six weeks for the Valpolicella Superiore from the Monte Lodoletta vineyard and about three months for the Amarone. The blend is Corvina-led with Rondinella, Croatina and Oseleta; Romano famously banished Molinara. The wines then spend about two years in new French oak and years more in bottle before release. His sons Marco, Luca and Michele now work alongside him.

The range is tiny: Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone and, in rare vintages only, a sweet red passito, Vigna Serè (plus a rare dried-Garganega white called Nettare). Expect enormous, dark, polished wines that need time and air. These are bottles for a night that deserves one.
