South Africa's Robertson Valley is Chardonnay country, and Danie de Wet has been making the case for decades. His Bon Vallon is the entry point to De Wetshof's range — and it punches well above its station. The vines grow in the limestone-rich soils of Robertson, a warm, dry inland valley tempered by cool ocean breezes that preserve freshness. This is unoaked Chardonnay at its most direct and satisfying: all citrus and stone fruit, no wood to muddle the picture. It's the kind of bottle that disappears fast — pour it at a summer table and watch.

"The 2025 Chardonnay Bon Vallon comes from limestone-rich soils, with up to six months on the fine lees. It has a fine, if rather conservative, bouquet. The palate is ripe on the entry, with peach and apricot notes, hints of vanilla and almond, leading to a finish that is just a little cloying compared to other cuvées from De Wetshof." —Neal Martin

"From a balanced and successful vintage, the De Wetshof Estate 2025 Robertson Bon Vallon Chardonnay is regarded as South Africa’s first unoaked Chardonnay and remains one of the estate’s purest limestone expressions. Fermented and matured on the lees for 100 to 120 days with regular lees suspension, it builds quiet depth and layered texture, showing orchard fruit, saline notes and a subtle nuance of petrichor through the mid-palate. The vineyards sit 250 meters above sea level on rocky limestone soils that amplify freshness and mineral clarity." —Monica Larner

More about De Wetshof

De Wetshof Estate, situated in Robertson Wine Valley, was the first registered wine estate in Robertson and pioneered the region's dry white wines. In 1981, they became the first in South Africa to commercially market both Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Danie de Wet's legacy has become a house specialty—limestone terroirs producing Chardonnay with real minerality and structure. The third generation (Johann and Peter) continues the tradition of site-specific, focused winemaking.
