What is this wine?
Dei is one of the benchmark producers of Montepulciano, Tuscany, founded in the 1960s and now led by Caterina Dei. The estate’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made primarily from Prugnolo Gentile (the local clone of Sangiovese), with small amounts of Canaiolo and Mammolo. The 2020 vintage was aged in large oak casks, highlighting fruit purity and the terroir of Montepulciano’s rolling hillsides.

Why get this wine?
Vino Nobile often sits in the shadow of Chianti Classico and Brunello, but Dei has consistently shown why this appellation is “the third great Sangiovese.” The wines are elegant, structured, and long-lived, and the 2020 vintage is an excellent, balanced year in Tuscany. Dei’s reputation for quality makes this one of the most reliable and collectible examples of Vino Nobile.

What does this wine taste like?
Medium to full-bodied, with vibrant red cherry and plum fruit, violet, and dried herbs, supported by notes of spice, cedar, and earthy minerality. Fine tannins and lively acidity provide lift and aging potential.

When should you drink this wine?
Approachable with a decant, but best 2025–2032. Pair with classic Tuscan dishes like pappardelle al ragù, roasted meats, or aged pecorino.

"Darkly alluring, the 2020 Nobile di Montepulciano lifts from the glass with rosemary and sage, complicating dried black cherries and hints of dark chocolate. This is pure elegance, soft and enveloping, flaunting its ripe vintage fruit with a core of zesty acidity that maintains fantastic balance. A coating of fine tannins tugs at the palate with youthful poise, and a tart cranberry concentration fades. This tremendous effort from the warm vintage should not be missed. That said, the production of Cantina Dei's Nobile was down by 50% due to the conditions of the year." —Eric Guido

"Supple and fluid, this red exudes cherry, loam, iron and eucalyptus flavors. Dusty tannins creep in as this evolves to the finish, where there's a lingering salty taste. Prugnolo Gentile and Canaiolo. Drink now through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported."

More about Dei

Dei makes Vino Nobile di Montepulciano the patient way: Sangiovese from some of the best slopes below the town, aged with patience and released with the perfume, juicy fruit and quiet tension that make Montepulciano's great red so rewarding at the table and in the cellar.

The story begins in 1964, when Alibrando Dei bought the Bossona vineyard, later adding Villa Martiena at the foot of the hill town. For two decades the family sold its grapes; the first Dei wines appeared in 1985. His granddaughter Caterina Dei, a musician, singer and actor as well as a winemaker, has run the estate since 1991. With her father Glauco, an engineer in the travertine business, and an architect, she designed the gravity-fed winery, a travertine building set into the hillside.

The vineyards are divided among crus including Martiena, Bossona, La Piaggia, La Ciarliana and Cervognano, on soils ranging from yellow sandstone to fossil-rich tufa and clay. The farming is organic in practice, with cover crops and no herbicides. The range runs from a bright Rosso di Montepulciano to the classic Vino Nobile, the single-vineyard Riserva Bossona from the estate's top site, and the Sancta Catharina blend. Expect elegant, aromatic Sangiovese with real staying power.
