The only Cabernet Erin and Massimo Di Costanzo produced in drought-stricken 2020, sourced from a single Oak Knoll vineyard picked the day before the Glass Fire. Extreme concentration marked the warm, dry vintage, delivering black cherry, plum, gravel, licorice, incense, and mocha. Medium to full-bodied with subtle herbal nuance, streamlined intensity, and slightly dusty tannins that frame rather than dominate. A resounding success for a challenging vintage, with 500 cases produced.

"The Cabernet Sauvignon DI CO is the only Cabernet Erin and Massimo Di Costanzo made in 2020. It emerges from the Rafael Vineyard in Oak Knoll. What comes through most is the extreme concentration of a warm, drought year. Black cherry, plum, gravel, licorice, incense and mocha are all dialed up. There are some angular contours in the tannins, but all things considered, the 2020 DI CO is a resounding success for the year. I would prefer to drink it on the earlier side." —Antonio Galloni

"Di Costanzo's 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Di Co comes from a single source in Oak Knoll—the only vineyard they picked that year (the day before the Glass Fire). It features a delicate balance of herbs and cassis, with a subtle note of licorice. Medium to full-bodied, it's streamlined and not overdone. Instead, it's nicely balanced, finishing long, with slightly dusty tannins. There are 500 cases of this impressive, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon." —Joe Czerwinski

More about Di Costanzo

Massimo Di Costanzo is from a new generation, with an upbringing that straddled the new world and the old — he grew up in the Bay Area but spent summers in Italy with family. He even worked as the day to day winemaker at Screaming Eagle for two years. And yet, he looks to the best international wines and the classic American bottlings of the "Golden Age" (and modern-day producers like Cathy Corison or Randy Dunn) to help him imagine what is possible. Like the greatest international wines, his do not lack for elegance, freshness or stoney minerality. But they also have plenty of California's signature notes in perfect balance: delicious fruit that goes on for miles, perfect tannins.

The wines are studies in terroir, farmed sustainably (DI CO) or organically (Farella Vineyard), made with minimal interventions and only a touch of sulfur at bottling. They ferment in stainless steel and age in a mix of oaks, but they all come across as pure Cabernet without any makeup at all. The single vineyard wines are incredibly precise expressions of site, whether from volcanic soils (Farella) or softly sloping woodlands (DI CO).
