"Les Voisines" means "the neighbors," and the name fits: this Arbois Chardonnay brings together four parcels, Curoulet, En Flandre, Les Corvées and La Platière, 2.35 hectares in all, on soils that run from gravelly marl to calcareous marl to blue marl. Past vintages have been made in the topped-up (ouillé) style, which avoids the nutty, oxidative side of Jura. Those wines showed bristling minerality, and you'd still never mistake them for anything but Jura. André-Jean Morin is the eighth generation of his family to grow vines in Arbois, but the line nearly broke. Scarred by World War I, his grandfather Marius quit making wine in 1922 and sold every vineyard except one small parcel, La Touraize, which now gives the domaine its name. A-J's father Michel started rebuilding in the mid-1950s against Marius's advice, and in 2009 A-J left the co-op and sold three of his 15 hectares to pay for a winery. Today the farming is organic and the cellar work is minimal: no added yeast or sugar, and no sulfur until malolactic fermentation is done. If you love Burgundian Chardonnay and want to taste what the grape does on Jura marl, this is a great place to start.

More about Domaine de la Touraize

A new addition to the Rosenthal Jura portfolio, this little domaine is the work of 8 generations of Morins. Over the years, these farmer-vignerons managed to hold onto their most prized vineyard, La Touraize. With old-fashioned tools and techniques, and an eye towards minimalism (no added yeasts, sugars, SO2 until malolactic fermentation finishes), the wines are purely delicious.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

“Les Voisines” (“the neighbors”) comes from 2.35 hectares of Chardonnay spread among four parcels in Arbois: Curoulet, En Flandre, Les Corvées, and La Platière, with soils ranging from gravelly marl to calcareous marl to blue marl. The fruit is pressed whole-cluster, undergoing alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in well-used barrels of varying sizes, where the wine spends 18 months on the fine lees and is bottled without fining or filtration, and with just 20-mg/L of sulfur added after malolactic finishes. The barrels are kept full, in the ouillé style, and the finished wine displays bristling minerality unaccented by oxidative elements. Despite its recognizable varietal character and its purity of fruit, however, this is a forcefully saline, chiseled iteration of Chardonnay that could be produced nowhere else but the Jura.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Trout with brown butter and almonds; roast chicken with morels and cream; a wedge of young Comté; scallops seared in butter; gougères or a leek tart to start.

Tasting Profile

Expect a taut, light-bodied Chardonnay in the topped-up (ouillé) style: lemon, green apple and white flowers over a saline, chalky minerality, with none of the nutty, oxidative notes of traditional Jura. Bright acidity keeps it crisp, and the finish is dry, clean and stony. Think of a leaner, more mineral cousin of Chablis or white Burgundy.
