Cazetiers is one of the great Gevrey 1er Crus, ranked by many alongside Clos Saint-Jacques and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques among the village's elite. The vineyard sits at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux, the cold draft that gives north-Gevrey wines their savage, spicy edge. Domaine Faiveley, now in the hands of seventh-generation Erwan Faiveley with Jérôme Flous as technical director since 2007, owns just over four hectares here and treats it as one of the estate's crown jewels. The 2019 is the warm, concentrated vintage you want from this site: dark fruit, flint, smoky oak, and clove on the nose, with silky tannins and a long, perfumed finish. Multidimensional and seriously ageworthy.

"In contrast to the prior wines, here the nose is quite firmly reduced. More interesting are the superbly concentrated and gorgeously textured big-bodied, powerful and muscular flavors that flash a mix of minerality and salinity on the wonderfully complex and highly persistent finish where the only nit is a slight warmth. This is potentially outstanding and a wine that should age effortlessly." —Allen Meadow

Antonio Galloni

"The palate is medium-bodied with elegant dark berry fruit and a harmonious, briny finish that completes this Les Cazetiers with style. I suspect the nose just needs some time to awaken and get its act together." —Vinous

Robert Parker

95 points

"Faiveley's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is very promising indeed, mingling aromas of smoky berry fruit and plums with hints of rose hip, orange peel, musk and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's concentrated and vibrant, with velvety tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish." —Robert Parker

Decanter

"Faiveley has a large holding in Cazetiers at 4.06ha and the oldest vines were planted in the 1950s. The fruit for this bottling is completely destemmed and yet there is a slightly exotic aroma here, plus a robust, dark fruit character. The tannins are supple and well-managed, recalling Morey more than Gevrey."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pair with roast duck or squab, beef bourguignon, rare lamb chops with rosemary, mushroom risotto, or coq au vin. Aged Comté and Époisses also work beautifully.

Tasting Profile

Medium- to full-bodied, layered, and multidimensional. Black cherry, plum, and smoky berry meet rose hip, orange peel, clove, and musk. Velvety tannins, lively acidity, and that signature Gevrey iron-and-flint grip carry a long, perfumed finish.

Faiveley is an Iconic Domaine in the best sense of the term. They have both history and pedigree (almost 200 years and 7 generations old), but also innovation as current managers Erwan and Eve Faiveley look to the future.
