Frédéric Mugnier called 2006 a "reference vintage" for its typicity and classicism, and Les Fuées is a firmer, darker Chambolle Premier Cru. That makes this a very good bottle for seeing what classic Mugnier looks like with some years on it. His 71-are parcel forms the southern border of Bonnes Mares. The vines, planted in 1960, give low yields of small, thick-skinned, deeply coloured berries, and the site leans more mineral and earthy than the village wine or Les Amoureuses. Mugnier grouped his 2005s and 2006s together as vintages built for very long ageing. He described the 2006s as less smooth and polished than the 2005s, but more vigorous, brighter and more vibrant. (A bit of trivia: "Fuées" is said to be an old Burgundian word for the patch of vines one man could plough with a hoe in a day.) The domaine makes only about 1,500 to 3,500 bottles of Les Fuées a year, so a mature bottle from a year the winemaker himself held up as a benchmark is a rare find.

Antonio Galloni

"Bright, dark red. Fresh, complex nose melds musky raspberry, smoky minerality, brown spices, mocha and underbrush. Lush and fat with fruit; in fact, this is amazingly opulent for 2006 but almost magically weightless. Finishes very long, sweet and perfumed, with substantial fine tannins and notes of game and spice. Very impressive." —Stephen Tanzer

"Peat, black tea, game, mint, crushed stone, and dark berry aromas rise in at once sinister and enticing profusion from the glass of Mugnier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees. Corresponding low-toned complexity characterizes the opulently-textured and caressing, bittersweet palate. Stony minerality proves the most tenaciously aspect of this dark beauty's long, soothing, yet almost brooding finish. It sent chills back up my spine just transcribing my tasting note and recreating this wine's uncanny, hard-to-describe character. I suspect it will be worth following for ten or a dozen years, probably longer. The track record at this address is more than merely convincing." —David Schildknecht

More about Jacques-Frederic Mugnier

When Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier pulls Pinot Noir from Chambolle-Musigny, especially the legendary Les Amoureuses, you're tasting one of Burgundy's most hypnotic expressions. Aromatic, silken, age-worthy—wines that sit at the exact intersection of power and grace, of fruit and structure. Becky Wasserman's importing ensures these reach the best tables in America. Worth the effort to find and worth the price once you understand what you're getting.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or duck breast with cherry jus, beef tenderloin with wild mushrooms, braised venison, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the firmer, darker side of Chambolle-Musigny: black cherry and blackberry fruit over earthy, mineral notes, with less of the village's usual floral lift. Typically full-bodied and deep, with a direct attack, fine but firm tannins and bright acidity, finishing long and savoury; with bottle age, this style tends to pick up forest-floor and spice tones.
