There are few wines more revered in the Rhône—maybe anywhere—than Chave’s Hermitage Rouge. It’s not just about power or pedigree, but about precision, place, and patience. Blended from multiple historic parcels across the Hermitage hill, the 2021 shows Chave’s signature touch in a cooler, more classic vintage: less opulence, more detail.

Blackberry, plum, and blueberry are wrapped in layers of cracked pepper, smoked meat, violets, and iron-rich earth. The tannins are firm but polished, and the structure is there for decades. Yet even now, there's a quiet perfume and savory complexity that make it hard to resist. Cellar it if you can—but if you must open it soon, decant and serve with something worthy: roast lamb, wild game, or nothing but silence. This is Syrah at its most profound.

"A tasting of the constituent lieux-dits before blending was as instructive as ever. Péléat was smooth, silky and red-fruited with good acidity; Beaumes slightly meatier, a little less concentrated than a typical year, but with good tannic drive; L'Ermite was serious, dry and mineral; Bessards very strict, with tight, rigid tannins. The final blend is likely to produce a structural rather than generous style of Hermitage, with tannins that will need a long time in bottle to settle. This will be ascetic in youth, then complex and textural with age."
