Fixin sits at the very northern tip of the Côte de Nuits, a sleepy village in Gevrey-Chambertin's shadow — which is exactly why it's one of the smartest stops for serious Burgundy without the Gevrey premium. Les Arvelets is one of Fixin's handful of 1er Crus, a slope that gives darker, more structured Pinot than the village norm. Virgile Lignier runs the family Domaine Lignier-Michelot from his home base in Morey-Saint-Denis (distinct from Hubert Lignier or Lucie & Auguste Lignier), and his Fixin gets the same low-intervention, whole-cluster handling as the bigger wines. 2023 here shows generous black-fruited density wrapped around firm, fine tannins. Built to reward five to ten years in the cellar but already vivid with an hour in a carafe.

"A more sauvage-inflected and exuberantly floral nose features the cool essence of wild red berries. The equally cool, precise and tension-filled middle weight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere, dusty and equally well-balanced finale. This is pretty much textbook Arvelets." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2023 Fixin Les Arvelets 1er Cru, which contains 70% whole bunch, has a Morey-like bouquet, with lovely black plummy fruit, forest floor/autumn leaves and clove aromas. The palate is silky smooth without a hair out of place—the stems completely disguised. Quite sensual and sumptuous on the finish, this is a really classy Fixin that may surpass the impressive 2022." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Lignier-Michelot

Virgile Lignier-Michelot's eight-hectare parcel in Morey-Saint-Denis sits on some of Burgundy's most expressive terroir. Pinot Noir from premier and grand cru sites that taste like soil and time compressed into a glass. Becky Wasserman's selections bring these to America, where they're recognized as serious reds. Serious reds for serious collectors—no shortcuts, no fashion, just craft that respects the vineyard and the tradition.
