Six women across three generations now lead this estate—founded when Dr. Georges Mugneret (an ophthalmologist and passionate vigneron) married into the Gibourg family in 1928. He purchased the Chaignots parcel in 1971. The name derives from "chêne" (oak) in old French; the pebbly, limestone-rich soil faces southeast. The 2009 is "deep, dark and muscular, showing tons of intensity" with "elegance and harmony on top of a solid base of Nuits-Saint-Georges." 91 points. Classic Burgundy winemaking from one of the Côte de Nuits' most respected domaines.

Burghound

92 points

"A lightly spiced nose of red currant cassis and violet aromas is trimmed in soft wood notes that precede the supple and moderately well-concentrated yet relatively fine medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent depth and length in a well-balanced package. Like its 2010 counterpart it is only on the finish does the robustness of a classic Nuits arrive and overall, this is really fine juice with excellent cellaring potential."
