Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Pure, scented aromas of smoke, cinnamon and flowers. Fat, full-bodied and spicy, with an intriguing smoked meat quality on the palate. Smooth and fine-grained in the middle, then a bit tannic on the back. But this is balanced, ripe and very long, with a persistent spice character." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"Combining pickings from the Altenbourg and the Clos des Capucins itself, Weinbach’s 2004 Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive smells of roses, celery seed, brown spices, and honey. Sultry and rich in the mouth and exuding peach preserves and brown spices, this introduces pecan bittersweet toastiness and an unexpectedly saline, savory, invigorating mineral note in a long finish that helps balance its sweetness. Admirably well-balanced, this should be worth following for at least 10-12 years, although it would be hard to resist pulling a cork now." —David Schildknecht

More about Weinbach

Why does Alsace get overlooked? The answer is maybe it actually doesn't anymore. A lot of our sommelier friends come by the shop to see what is new in Alsace, which means they're putting the wines on top wine lists too. So it's only a matter of time before the press catches up.

And in truth the top domaines have always been sought out among collectors. Domaine Weinbach is in the very top tier (with Trimbach and Humbrecht).

Weinbach has a long tradition of excellence (over 400 years long!) in producing wines in the heart of what is considered Alsace's best terroir. The Domaine's original vineyard, Clos du Capucins, sits at the foot of the Grand Cru Schlossberg which was the first Grand Cru in Alsace. Their style is to pure and transparent: emphasizing terroir and elegance over power.
