Nineteen years in bottle on one of Germany's most coveted Spätlesen. Dönnhoff sits at the very top of Nahe Riesling — Helmut Dönnhoff built the estate's reputation across the 1980s and 90s, and his son Cornelius now leads the cellar. Oberhäuser Brücke (literally "upper houses bridge") is the family's monopole, a small parcel of grey slate over loess loam on a south-southwest-facing slope right where the Nahe river bends past the village of Oberhausen — the river's microclimate moderates everything, encouraging early flowering and long, slow ripening. 2007 was a Kabinett- and Spätlese-friendly vintage in the Nahe, and the Brücke Spätlese in particular drew rave reviews on release. Now in full mid-life, the petrol notes are emerging alongside the citrus.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Subtle aromas of lichee, lemon oil and smoked pine nuts. Rich tropical fruits with a hint of smoke and an intriguing piquancy on the palate. A subtle acidity gives the sweet, spicy finish a rather feminine aspect. Very nicely balanced." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

94 points

"Lemon, grapefruit, red raspberry and persimmon rise from the glass of 2007 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, whose palate dynamics seem like chamber music after the thundering, orchestral Kupfergrube. Saline and wet stone mineral notes as well as deep, malty, nut oil richness compliment the berry and citrus and the finish here is simply ravishingly intricate. Look for 20 or more years of fascination." —David Schildknecht

Jancis Robinson

18 points

"Some oily spice at first, touch of linseed. Rich, deep but a real lightness of touch to a dancing finish."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"An elegant, playful white, with grapefruit, apricot, vanilla and mineral flavors dancing across the palate. Fine intensity and a lingering finish."

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Aromatic Asian cooking — Thai green curry, Sichuan kung pao, Vietnamese pho, Korean bibimbap — or roast pork loin with apples, smoked trout, classic foie gras terrine, and pungent washed-rind cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Off-dry, low alcohol. Lemon curd, grapefruit, persimmon, red raspberry, with developing petrol, malty nut oil, and saline wet-stone minerality. Bright acidity holds everything taut; finish is intricate, long, ravishing.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
