A 2005 Barolo in magnum from Cannubi, the hill the producer calls Barolo's most famous vineyard. That's a strong claim, and the vineyard's reputation backs it up. The estate's vines sit on the south-facing Cannubi slope in the commune of Barolo, on a mix of Tortonian and Helvetian marls with a large share of sand. The wine is pure Nebbiolo from the Michet and Lampia sub-varieties. The story behind the label is a good one. Luigi Pira, the last of his line, was also the last man to crush grapes by foot and make wine without machinery. After he died, his sisters sold the vineyards and cellar to the Boschis family, long-time friends of the Piras. Chiara Boschis became one of the first women making Barolo in the late 1980s and brought fresh ideas to the cellar and the house style. Her estate went on to become the first in Cannubi to convert to organic farming. This is a bottle for a table of people who love Barolo with real age on it, so give it time in a decanter before pouring.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2005 Barolo Cannubi is dark, round and sensual, with lovely palate presence and textural intensity. Still fresh and vibrant, the 2005 has aged beautifully. Today, the tannins remain imposing, so readers will have to give the 2005 another few years in bottle. The new French oak remains evident, but all things considered, the 2005 is in a good shape." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"Blueberry and fresh raspberry aromas follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a fruity, crisp finish. This is pure and beautiful. Best after 2012."

Wine Enthusiast

"Vintner Chiara Boschis took over this historic estate after the death of its founder Luigi Pira. She continues in a precise Barolo tradition that pays attention to quality of fruit and vineyard designations. The Cannubi cru, for example, is celebrated for the elegant nature of its wines. Here you will encounter fine aromas of orange blossom, wild berries, white mineral and delicate floral notes."

More about E. Pira e Figli

When Luigi Pira passed, his friends the Boschis stepped in to preserve his legacy—a decision that led to Chiara Boschis taking over in 1990 and quietly revolutionizing Barolo. She was the first grower in Cannubi to go organic and has spent decades convincing her neighbors to follow suit. These are serious, site-specific Barolos from a handful of the region's greatest vineyards.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef braised in Barolo with polenta; tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; rosemary-roasted leg of lamb; wild mushroom risotto; aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Cannubi profile: ripe cherry and plum with spice, a floral hint of violet and a signature balsamic lift of mint and eucalyptus. Typically warm and powerful yet elegant, with Nebbiolo's lively acidity and firm but supple tannins, finishing long and dry. Think of a bigger, more tannic and savoury cousin of Pinot Noir.
