A Cabernet-based Tuscan red that has already done its time in the cellar, the 2013 Salamartano arrives mature and integrated, ready to drink tonight. That's the kind of patience most of us never manage with our own bottles. Montellori sits in Fucecchio, in the western part of the province of Florence and inside Chianti territory, but Salamartano is the estate's Bordeaux-leaning red: an IGT Toscana built around Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The two Cabernets grow in Cerreto Guidi at about 150 metres on loose, stony soils full of fossils, while the Merlot is planted on clay. Alessandro Nieri, the fourth generation of his family here, took over in 1998 after years of sharing the job with his father, Giuseppe. His philosophy is simple: do the best work in the vineyard so the cellar doesn't have to intervene. Now the oak sits quietly in the background, and it's a fine way to see what Tuscan Cabernet turns into with some age.
