One of the Loire's most coveted reds, drinking at maturity. Clos Rougeard, near Chace in Saumur-Champigny, made Cabernet Franc into a vin de garde long before the region was fashionable. Les Poyeux comes from older vines on a gentle south-facing slope of eroded sandstone over tuffeau in Chacé, one of the estate's great single-vineyard cuvées, aged in barrel for depth and length. The 2007 was a cooler, lighter vintage, so this is a graceful, fully resolved bottle to enjoy now. A rare chance to taste Loire history at its peak.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Clos Rougeard’s 2007 Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux is striking. Rich and beautifully layered on the palate, with tons of Cabernet Franc character, the 2007 is a sexy, racy wine. I love it." —Antonio Gallonni

More about Clos Rougeard

There are some very famous wines that are extremely limited and inspire a cult following, and then there is Clos Rougeard. Brothers Charly and Nady Foucault made tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and even tinier amounts of Chenin Blanc in Saumur-Champigny and Saumur that became some of the most sought-after bottles in France. The trick: old vines on special clay and limestone terroir, tiny yields and meticulous farming. After Charly's death in 2015, the Bouygues family of Château Montrose bought the 11-hectare estate in 2017. Still extremely limited.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
