Famille Mousse, Champagne Les Fortes Terres Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut, 2021

2021 was the year frost, hail and mildew tore through the Marne and cost the Mousses the overwhelming majority of their crop, so a single-parcel bottling from that vintage is a small and hard-won thing. Les Fortes Terres sits on the hilltop above Cuisles, where a shallow layer of green clay and limestone marl covers chalk, and the forty-year-old Meunier there gives the most structured wine in the house. It is fermented and aged in stainless steel, put through malolactic, then left on the lees for years before being disgorged with only a trace of dosage. This is the Mousse cuvee for people who think Meunier cannot be serious. A fire destroyed the family's winery in the summer of 2026; the Mousses are rebuilding, and these bottles were made before it.

More about Famille Mousse

Growers since 1750 in the village of Cuisles, in a side valley off the Marne, Famille Moussé is now run by fourth-generation Cédric Moussé, who farms organically, runs the cellar on solar and geothermal power, and lets sheep, pigs and chickens work the vines. Meunier is the star here, about 80% of the vineyard, and the band of green illite clay under Cuisles gives it a lift and finesse that makes the case for Champagne's underdog grape.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
