Favonius

(1 products)

Favonius is named for the Roman god of the west wind, the mild Atlantic breeze that sweeps across Portugal's Lisboa region, and the wines taste of that coast: fresh, salty and bright.

The label is a collaboration between two friends from university days in Lisbon: Rodrigo Martins, a winemaker who also co-runs the acclaimed natural-leaning Lisboa estate Espera, and Pedro Cabanita, an agronomist. Their small winery, Authentic Wines, bottles everything under the Favonius name. The grapes are farmed organically, mostly local Portuguese varieties such as Fernão Pires, Arinto and Touriga Nacional, grown close enough to the ocean to keep acidity high and alcohol moderate.

In the cellar the approach is natural and simple: stainless steel rather than oak, and, as they put it, nothing added and nothing taken away. The short range includes a skin-contact white called Curtimenta, a crisp Arinto, a light Touriga Nacional red and a Touriga Nacional pét-nat. These are low-intervention wines that stay clean and focused, and a great way into Portugal's fast-growing natural wine scene.
