Use code 10OFF to get 10% off 12+ bottles

The Nowack family has roots in Vandières dating to 1795, originally as brickmakers before becoming Champagne producers after WWI. Today, Frederic Nowack and his son Flavien run the 3.6-hectare estate. Flavien took over management in 2011 after training in Burgundy, including at the renowned Coche-Dury in Meursault. Les Arpents Rouges comes from a single parcel in Vandières planted in 1987 on clay sandstone soils—historically used for still red wine, hence the name. The blend is 60% Pinot Meunier and 40% Chardonnay, fermented spontaneously in 228L barrels with no chaptalization, fining, filtering, or added sulfur at any point.

More about Flavien Nowack

Flavien Nowack makes the case that Meunier, long written off as Champagne's blending workhorse, is a noble grape capable of real depth, complexity and age. His single-parcel, single-vintage Champagnes from the Vallée de la Marne are some of the most exciting arguments for it.

The Nowacks have been in Vandières since 1795, when a newcomer from Eastern Europe married into a local Marne Valley family; their son Baptiste was the family's first vigneron. Flavien joined the estate in 2011, inspired by growers such as Emmanuel Brochet, and has steered it toward organic farming, dropping herbicides and planting trees for biodiversity. Meunier makes up about three-quarters of the vineyards, alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on clay, limestone, marl and sand.

In the cellar he works without additives: native-yeast fermentations, little or no sulfur, and bottles aged under cork. Dosage is low or zero. Look for the parcel wines that map Vandières one grape at a time: La Fontinette (Meunier), La Tuilerie (Chardonnay) and Les Bauchets (Pinot Noir), plus the blended S.A. The style is lean, chiseled and vinous, with the emphasis on site rather than sparkle.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
