MunJebel CS comes from Chiusa Spagnola, one of the contrade Frank Cornelissen bottles separately off Mount Etna's northern slopes. The MunJebel reds are all Nerello Mascalese, each labeled with its two-letter contrada code so you can compare the volcano's parcels side by side. Cornelissen, the Belgian former wine importer who relocated to Sicily after falling for Burgundy, makes them with no additions and obsessive cellar hygiene, so they're alive but never muddy. Chiusa Spagnola tends to be a touch more structured and savory. The 2021 is young and rewards patience or a good decant.

"Nuances of crushed blackberries and plums mix with sage and wet stone as the darkly floral 2021 Rosso Munjebel CS slowly emerges from the glass. This seduces with its mix of silken textures and juicy acidity as a wave of ripe black fruit envelops the senses, all underscored by a gripping core of minerality. A wall of tannins builds through the finish, slightly contrasting residual notes of tart cherry and hints of bitter dark chocolate. The 2021 is a powerhouse and needs patience to find its footing." —Eric Guido

"The organic Frank Cornelissen 2021 Munjebel CS is Nerello Mascalese on its own roots from the Vigneto Chiusa Spagnolo across 2.5 hectares at 620 meters in elevation. The grapes are destemmed and lightly pressed to produce a lightweight red with lots of bright primary fruit and a punchy style. There is a spicy hint of entrapped carbon dioxide that you feel like a pinch on the tongue. This wine's alcohol content is an elevated 15.5%. Due to these factors, I suggest a near-term drinking window for a wine that might prove less stable in the long term. This is a release of 3,700 bottles." —Monica Larner

"The excellent 2021 Munjebel CS, from old ungrafted Nerello Mascalese grown in the Chiusa Spagnolo site in contrada Zottorinoto, is wild and mysterious. One of five wines that Cornelissen defines as a Grand Cru, it opens with compelling aromas of violet, rose, forest berry, wet stone and dark spice. Delicious and beautifully balanced, the intense palate shows finesse and structure, providing layers of red fruit, citrus, dark culinary spice and tangy mineral notes that linger on the finish. Firm, refined tannins and bright acidity provide the framework while the mineral tension gives it an edge. Drink 2028–2036." —Kerin O'Keefe
