Another of Hirtzberger's celebrated Spitz crus, this one with a slightly different signature — Hochrain sits on weathered crystalline rock with a thin overlay of sandy loam, which gives the Smaragd a touch more flesh than its purely gneiss-bound siblings. Still unmistakably Wachau: cool, mineral, vertical, built for the long haul. 2024 brought clarity and tension to the vineyard, and the result is a Riesling that opens with white peach and apricot before tightening into citrus oil, dried herbs, and a long crushed-stone finish. Franz Hirtzberger Jr. now leads the family estate his father turned into a Wachau benchmark, and Hochrain is one of the wines that explains why the address commands the loyalty it does.

"The 2024 Riesling Hochrain Smaragd comes from a loess-based sub-parcel of Axpoint and includes some vines that are more than 70 years old, with the remainder around 40 years old. The nose is all scent, all tangerine, all crushed citrus foliage. On the palate, there is a notion of lemon oil and a tingling zestiness. Franz Hirtzberger and F.X. Pichler are the two greatest producers of the Wachau and arguably of dry white wines in Austria. Located in the tiny village of Spitz, surrounded by mountains and the Danube, Hirtzberger makes Riesling that tastes like pure minerality and precision. His terraced vineyard names—Hochrain, Singerriedel, Steinporz—are synonymous with the greatest wines of the region.
