This is the hillside Viognier was cloned from. The Coteau de Vernon served as the world reference for the grape's clones. Francis Vernay planted his first vines here and in 1940 gave the slope's name to the domaine's first cuvée. Georges went on to be credited with saving the Condrieu appellation, and today Christine Vernay, who took over in 1996 as the third generation, works the slopes alongside her daughter Emma. The vineyard is a stack of tiny stone-walled terraces in the heart of the village, mostly facing southeast on hard granite with mica and dark schist. It climbs from almost the river's edge to about 900 feet, the highest point in Condrieu. The farming is certified organic and every job is done by hand. The vines are 50 to 80 years old. As a rule the family keeps things gentle in the cellar with this cuvée: whole-cluster pressing, native yeasts, and aging in large foudre and barrel with little new oak. If you want to know what Condrieu can be at its most serious, this is the bottle to start with.

"The 2023 Condrieu Côteau de Vernon is dashing as it opens with early-ripe peach and apricot, lemon peel, pastry and dried blossom. Midweight carrying real substance, the 2023 is a superbly balanced Côteau de Vernon with scope and density, settling the expression with immaculate freshness on the nuanced and refined long finish. Gorgeous." —Nicolas Greinacher

"The 2023 Condrieu Coteaux du Vernon, vinified in the same way as Les Chaillées de l’Enfer, reveals a more solar yet equally refined profile. It opens with aromas of pear, baked peach, jasmine and sweet spices, complemented by a touch of exotic fruit. Full-bodied, dense and enveloping, it’s built around a powerful, concentrated and fleshy core of fruit, underpinned by a subtle mineral thread. Crystalline and layered, it displays impressive depth and length, concluding with a magnificent, structuring bitterness. This is a superb and complete expression of Vernon." —Yohan Castaing

More about Georges Vernay

George Vernay is the undisputed King of Condrieu. In fact, it was thanks to the efforts of his father, Francis Vernay, that the AOC was created in the first place, in 1940. While the domaine is renowned for their Viognier wines, they produce extraordinary red wines as well, from their holdings in Côte-Rôtie and other prestigious appellations.

Continuing with family tradition, George's daughter Christine is the current winemaker for the domaine and has a refined, restrained touch with the wine; elegance is the name of the game here. While the family gained fame through their work in Condrieu, their Syrah wines, specifically the Côte-Rôtie, are considered among the region's best.

The steep hillsides of the Côteau de Vernon preclude any mechanical harvest; the respect the family has for the natural flora and fauna precludes the use of any pesticide or herbicide. Christine Vernay's winemaking philosophy is to create wines with all the hedonistic pleasure Northern Rhone wines can offer, with grapes hand-picked at the peak of ripeness, and not a moment after. The Viognier is intensely and classically aromatic; the Syrah is powerful and savory, not to mention age-worthy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Butter-poached lobster, turbot or halibut with beurre blanc, seared scallops with brown butter, roast chicken with morels and cream, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

A dry white Viognier. The Vernays say Coteau de Vernon usually shows yellow fruit, fresh and candied citrus and some exotic fruit, though this varies from year to year. It has freshness and very good acidity, and the finish lingers with a gentle bitter edge.
