Pinot Grigio made by Benedictine monks — and made like it matters, which is not how this grape usually gets treated. Muri-Gries is a working monastery in Gries, just outside Bolzano, where the monks handle the spiritual side and the winemaking has long been left to laymen (the secular Werth family ran the cellar for decades, with Christian Werth handing the keys to Manfred Bernard after more than 36 years). The house is unapologetically a red-wine producer at heart — Lagrein is the passion — which makes its two dry whites feel less like a commercial obligation and more like something they actually wanted to get right. The Pinot Grigio comes from hillside sites around Bolzano and Appiano between 260 and 500 metres, on calcareous gravel. The house point of view is that Pinot Grigio, Alto Adige's most planted variety, turns robust and almost Burgundian here — which is to say this is a bigger, more serious wine than the name leads you to expect.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Pinot Grigio wafts up with subtle tropical citrus tones and hints of pear. It splashes across the palate with ripe pit fruits while displaying a pretty inner sweetness. This finishes fresh and squeaky clean." —Eric Guido

Robert Parker

"Made in stainless steel only, the Muri-Gries 2024 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio (with 40,000 bottles produced) has aromas of Pink Lady apple, lemon drop and white flower. This is a simple, lean-bodied white to drink with fried appetizers or finger foods. Vineyards are planted on calcareous and alluvial soils that are typical of this mountainous area of northern Italy." —Monica Larner

Decanter

"Elegant with tingling freshness, citrus and floral aromas, notes of flavours of pear and almond and a sapid, saline finish."

More about Muri-Gries

Few wineries anywhere are still run from inside a working monastery. Muri-Gries is one of them: the cellar of the Benedictine abbey on Piazza Gries in Bolzano.

The name tells the story. In 1845 Benedictine monks from Muri, in the Swiss canton of Aargau, took over the former Augustinian house in Gries, now part of Bolzano, along with its vines. For generations the wine was made mainly for the monastery itself; bottling for sale only began in the early 1960s. Today the estate farms about 35 hectares within a few kilometers of the abbey, in and around Bolzano and on the Eppan (Appiano) plateau, including the Klosteranger, the vineyard right beside the monastery.

This is red-wine country first, and Lagrein, the dark, juicy native grape of the Bolzano basin, is the house specialty, with new plantings propagated from the estate's own selection of vines. The whites, among them Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Sylvaner and Gewürztraminer, are fermented and kept in stainless steel for freshness, while the reds age in large casks and barriques. Expect clean, precise Alpine wines with a light touch, made by people who have had a long time to get it right.

Tasting Profile

A serious, structured take on Pinot Grigio rather than a throwaway one.
