Touriga Nacional usually comes across as big, dark and forceful. Gota's Bergamota goes the other way: a lighter, more refined take on Portugal's flagship red grape, meant to be as happy next to homemade pasta as next to a chargrilled steak. The name gives it away. Bergamot is the citrus that scents Earl Grey tea, and Gota's view is that Touriga Nacional gives off that same perfume. The house sources its Touriga from three Dão subregions (Castendo, Serra da Estrela and Alva), from small dry-farmed plots on granite and clay at 200–300 metres. Winds coming off the mountainsides keep the grapes fresh there. Gota is run by Natalia Jessa, who is from Poland and came to Porto by way of Ireland, and who makes affordable, delicious Portuguese wine. Her motto, "Drink it, don't overthink it," sums up the appeal: you get real Dão character without any fuss.

Tasting Profile

Expect a lighter, perfumed take on Dão red: violet and citrus-peel lift over red and dark berries, with the savoury, slightly earthy edge the region's granite soils are known for. Typically medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and fine, gentle tannins, it finishes dry and clean. Think closer to Pinot Noir in weight than a big, dark Touriga.
