The 2022 Berthaut-Gerbet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is an exceptional Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most iconic vineyards. Amélie Berthaut, at the helm of Berthaut-Gerbet, has quickly established herself as one of the region’s most exciting winemakers, bringing finesse and a contemporary touch to her wines while respecting Burgundy’s long traditions. The Clos de Vougeot vineyard, with its storied history and varied terroir, consistently produces wines of power, complexity, and age-worthy structure.

In the glass, this wine reveals a deep ruby hue with garnet highlights. The nose is captivating and layered, offering aromas of black cherries, ripe raspberries, and plums, complemented by floral notes of violets and earthy undertones of forest floor and truffle. Subtle hints of spice, such as clove and black pepper, and a touch of fine oak add depth and elegance. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with velvety tannins and a vibrant acidity that frames its concentrated core of dark fruit flavors. Earthy minerality and savory nuances enhance the wine’s complexity, leading to a long, refined finish with lingering notes of spice and dried herbs.

The 2022 vintage, marked by warm and consistent weather, imparts ripe, generous fruit while preserving the freshness and balance that define the finest wines of Clos de Vougeot. This Grand Cru pairs wonderfully with roasted venison, duck confit, or a classic beef bourguignon. While approachable in its youth for its exuberant fruit and polished texture, it has the depth and structure to evolve beautifully over the next 15–20 years, rewarding patience with layers of nuance and sophistication. Berthaut-Gerbet’s Clos de Vougeot is a testament to the estate’s rising reputation and the enduring prestige of this legendary vineyard.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"A distinctly earthy nose is wonderfully fresh with a more restrained nose of softer floral influences and ripe yet cool red cherry and raspberry scents. Once again the medium-bodied flavors possess a beguiling texture that contrasts moderately with the robust, dusty and powerful finish that is a bit less austere than it typically is. Even so, this is also very built-to-age so at least some patience should prove beneficial."

"The 2022 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which contains 40% whole bunches, has a sense of airiness on the nose, though it doesn't quite have the fruit concentration as the Les Petits-Monts. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, tea leaves and bay leaves infusing the black fruit with a tertiary finish. It's an introspective Clos Vougeot requiring 4-6 years in bottle." -Vinous

Robert Parker

"The 2022 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has turned out very well, unwinding in the glass with notes of orange zest, plums, dark berries, spices and smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, plush and layered palate that's deep and textural, concluding with a penetrating finish. It's a strong effort that exhibits good density without any concomitant asperity."

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

Planted in 1956, along the east wall of the Clos, minimal slope, rocky soils with more clay. Aged in barrel (approximately 30% new oak). 50% whole cluster fermentation.
