The Piesporter Goldtropfchen is one of the Mosel's most storied vineyards, a sun-trap amphitheater of gray slate that has been prized for centuries. This is Stefan Steinmetz's dry, everyday expression of it, the green-cap bottling that sits below his top single-parcel selection but still carries the site's pedigree. 2021 was a classic cool Mosel vintage, and it shows in the wine's flinty tension and low, easygoing alcohol. Dry, precise, and built to age, this is a lot of famous-vineyard character without the ceremony.

Robert Parker

"The 2021 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling is very clear, refined, fresh and elegant on the nose, revealing fine and aromatic Riesling aromas with coolish flinty notes. Round, precise and saline on the palate, this is an intense but medium-bodied, wonderfully juicy and elegant Goldtröpfchen with sustainable salinity and fine grip. This is a complex and age-worthy Mosel classic of remarkable style and elegance. 12% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in May 2023." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
