Extra Brut means almost no sugar added before corking, so there's nowhere for the wine to hide. This is how a family sure of its vineyards should make grower Champagne. The Méa family has made wine in the Grand Cru village of Louvois since Gilbert Méa started in 1922. Louvois sits right up against northwest Bouzy, with all its vineyards south of the village on hills facing back toward the river. Fun fact: the village is named for the wolves ("loup" in French) that used to come down from the forests above and through the vines. Five generations on, the estate has passed from father to son, then father to daughter, and now mother to daughter. That's a rare line of succession in a region long run by its big houses and their patriarchs. Today the family farms 24 plots, mostly Pinot Noir, across two Grand Cru and four Premier Cru villages. They use no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, and the estate is HVE certified. Signature is a serious, honest bottle for anyone who wants their Champagne about place, not polish.

More about Guy Mea

Méa is grower Champagne from the Montagne de Reims with Pinot Noir at its heart and a young couple at the helm who have pushed the style toward drier, more terroir-driven wines. The estate is based in Louvois, a Grand Cru village on the southern side of the Montagne, and works plots in Grand and Premier Cru villages including Louvois, Bouzy and Ludes.

This is a five-generation family story. Guy Méa took charge of the vines as a boy in 1940, when his father René was held prisoner during the war, and began building the family's own Champagne business from 1951. His daughter Evelyne joined in 1982, with her husband Jean-Louis Milesi running the vineyards for more than thirty years. Today their daughter Sophie and her husband Franck Moussié, who came from Bordeaux, lead the estate, which now goes by Domaine Méa.

Pinot Noir dominates the plantings, with Chardonnay and a little Meunier. The domaine is HVE certified and has been converting to organic farming. Wines rest for years on their lees in chalk cellars, and much of the range is finished Extra Brut or Brut Nature, so the low dosage lets the Pinot's depth and the chalk come through.

L'Assemblage is the natural starting point; Rosa Délice is the house rosé, and Cuvée des Loups is the vintage wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters with mignonette, gougères, crisp fried chicken, sea bream crudo with citrus and olive oil, aged Comté, or salt-and-pepper shrimp.

Tasting Profile

Expect a bone-dry, precise Champagne: Pinot Noir typically brings red apple, red berry and the firm, vinous body of the Montagne de Reims, while Chardonnay adds citrus and a chalky lift. With barely any dosage, the acidity reads bright and taut and the mousse fine. The finish is usually long, mineral and savoury, with a hint of brioche.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
