Gouges says its Vaucrains needs about twelve years before it shows everything it has, and this 2005 has had well over that. That makes it a rare chance to open a serious Burgundy at the point the producer intended, not years too early. The parcel sits mid-slope directly above Les Saint-Georges, right where the Combe des Vallerots opens out, and the forest edge marks its upper boundary. Yields here are naturally very low, and the domaine describes the wine as intense, with freshness and minerality as its signatures. Vaucrains was one of the estate's early purchases, and Henri Gouges (1889–1967) bought most of the estate's vines when vineyard prices fell after the war. The domaine dates itself to 1920 and still farms only in Nuits-Saint-Georges: close to 15 hectares that include seven premiers crus. This is slow-maturing, serious Nuits rather than a crowd-pleaser, and now is when the long wait pays off. Stand it upright for a day and decant it gently before serving.
