This premier cru Gevrey-Chambertin has a family secret in it: fruit from "Pinot Magnien." The house puts fruit from those Pinot Magnien vines, now more than 100 years old, into its Les Cazetiers. The family has been in Gevrey since 1656. Charles Magnien, the twelfth generation, is the first of them to bottle the domaine's whole range instead of selling off fruit or wine. 2019 was also the first vintage made in the domaine's new cuverie, and Charles works gently there: fairly cool fermentations and pump-overs rather than punch-downs. You get a family heirloom grape and a new generation's hands in the same bottle, from one of the domaine's premier cru sites.

"An overtly sauvage and intensely earthy nose features mostly dark currant aromas that are trimmed in moderate wood. The energetic bigger-bodied medium weight flavors possess fine depth and mid-palate concentration while terminating in a powerful, serious, dusty and mildly austere finish. This markedly mineral-driven effort is a classically styled Caz and while it's not as concentrated as the 2020 version, it still has the stuffing to amply reward a decade plus of cellaring." —Allen Meadows

"The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru comes from all four soil profiles in the vineyard – the only producer to have the "complete set." The generous bouquet presents red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, crushed stone and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied and fleshy, with supple tannins, black pepper and a touch of sage toward the finish. Very fine." —Neal Martin

"The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is very promising, mingling notes of rose petals and wild berries with hints of loamy soil, sweet spices and a discreet application of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, it's fleshy and enveloping, with lively acids and a suave, elegant profile. This is well worth seeking out." —William Kelley

More about Henri Magnien

Few families can match the Magniens' roots in Gevrey-Chambertin. They have been there since 1656, and they even have their own strain of Pinot Noir. Pinot Magnien, a mutation the family identified in the 19th century, gives small, thick-skinned berries with concentrated juice. It still covers most of their vineyard area, and replacement vines come from massal selections of it.

Charles Magnien, the twelfth generation, took over from his father, François, more than a decade ago. He was the first in the family to bottle the whole range rather than sell off fruit or wine. The domaine is small, around six to seven hectares. At its heart are the grand cru Ruchottes-Chambertin and the premiers crus Lavaut Saint-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Champeaux, with some vines more than a century old. It has recently added a foothold in Corton and Aloxe-Corton. Charles has put his energy into the vineyards, farming largely organically.

In the cellar, the grapes get a cold soak, then ferment spontaneously in stainless steel. The share of whole clusters varies with the vintage. Barrels are chosen for the origin of their oak rather than for oak flavor. The wines are intense and aromatic, with a fine, supple texture: Gevrey's power without the heaviness.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with a cherry or red wine sauce; coq au vin; roast squab or guinea fowl; wild mushroom risotto; beef bourguignon.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Gevrey-Chambertin premier cru profile: dark cherry and raspberry fruit with earthy, savoury notes and a touch of spice. Gentle, fairly cool fermentations typically keep extraction measured, giving a medium-bodied red with fresh acidity and firm but fine-grained tannins that finish long and dry. Think of the deeper, more structured side of red Burgundy.
