Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini is a Gevrey-Chambertin estate where Florence Heresztyn-Mazzini and Simon Mazzini farm old family vines biodynamically. Les Songes Vieilles Vignes is their old-vine village bottling, a wine that reliably overdelivers on its classification. The 2016 was a frost-reduced but excellent vintage that yielded balanced, charming, classically proportioned reds; this bottle has the structure to keep evolving and is drinking well now with a few more good years ahead. A smart way into serious Gevrey.

"A blend of two vineyards in the north of Gevrey-Chambertin, 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Songes" Vieilles Vignes includes 60% whole bunch, which was the limit in this vintage for the domaine. To be honest, you can barely tell that there is a lot of whole bunch here: very pure and mineral-driven with vivid brambly red berry fruit and a touch of bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, satisfying depth of black fruit tinged with smoke and tobacco that leads to a linear and focused finish. Very fine." —Neal Martin
