7.5% alcohol, and not one bit of it feels like a compromise. Johannes Weber started picking on September 14, 2019, exceptionally early for the estate, specifically to hold on to the airiness he wants in these wines; he has called it a vintage made for Falkenstein, with even more lift than the 2016 he treats as his personal benchmark. The Alte Reben cask, known in the cellar as Fuder Gisela, comes from roughly eighty-year-old ungrafted vines in the Gross Schock sector of the Krettnacher Euchariusberg, picked at 84 degrees Oechsle and stopping naturally around 45 grams of sugar — enough to round the edges, nowhere near enough to taste sweet against acidity like this. May frost and a July heat spike above 40°C had already cut yields to roughly 25 hectoliters per hectare, so there was very little of it to begin with. From a private cellar; lovely now and built to run for decades.

WINE GUIDES
German Wines
Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
