Clos de la Roche is the crown jewel of Morey-St-Denis, and in the hands of Hubert Lignier, it becomes something truly profound. The 2022 vintage brings ripe, healthy fruit and perfect balance—ideal conditions for a wine that’s always about structure, mineral tension, and slow-building complexity.

Lignier’s parcel is packed with old vines and worked with minimal intervention, resulting in a wine of serious presence: dark cherry and black plum, layered with spice, forest floor, crushed rock, and violets. The tannins are firm but fine, and the finish lasts for minutes.

This is Grand Cru Burgundy built for the long haul, but it already hints at the beauty to come. Decant now if you're feeling generous, or tuck it away for 10+ years and watch it unfurl.

"Here too the nose is sufficiently reduced as to mask the fruit. On the palate though there is both good verve and freshness to the highly seductive and rich larger-scaled flavors that brim with sappy dry extract and evident minerality on the balanced, firm and lingering finale that exhibits focused power. This is really quite impressive and a wine that should amply repay extended keeping. " -Allen Meadows

"The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of smoky plums and berries mingled with notions of cinnamon, raw cocoa, game bird and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with supple, powdery tannins cloaked by a sweet core of fruit, it concludes with a broad but saline finish." -William Kelley

"Beautiful, sweet black cherry fruit aromas with lovely floral notes and earthy, mineral complexity float from the glass of Lignier's Clos de la Roche. The texture is silky, fresh and lively, yet there is enough density to ensure that this will make old bones if desired. It is a blend of Monts Luisiants and Fremières; all the vines are 60 – 70 years of age. The grapes are partially destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in cask (30% new). Ideally, one would wait five to seven years before opening, but it is so attractive it may be difficult to hold off that long."

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

The Ligniers own just under a hectare in this hallowed grand cru, split among two plots: 0.62 ha. in the climat of Monts Luisants, and 0.28 ha. in Les Fremières. Laurent’s grandfather Henri planted the first vines here in 1955 and propagated the remainder of the holdings via selection massale between 1960 and 1966. The site’s particular terroir—a few inches of pebble-strewn topsoil above solid limestone rock—yields a wine of unfathomable mineral intensity, with rugged spices and a profound sense of earth framing its flinty, smoke-tinged core. One of the most iconic wines in our portfolio, Lignier’s Clos de la Roche is also one of the greatest wines in Burgundy. Spending seven seasons in barrel (one-third new), it should be cellared with utmost patience.

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
