This wine screams Lamole and is sourced from all of Susanna's highest vineyards—the highest in Chianti Classico. Aged only in concrete, it is offered up with no distractions. It abounds with violet aromatics, dried herbs, licorice, fresh and dried strawberry and cranberry fruit, and a savory, umami-packed salumi note. The tannins are well integrated but present—a perfect example of Sangiovese's quintessentially sandy, round grip. I can report from experience that a picnic with friends of pecorino, prosciutto, fennel sausages, pane Toscana, and a grassy olive oil will leave everyone sated.

"The I Fabbri 2023 Chianti Classico Olinto Grassi e Figlio Terra di Lamole is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo. This organic red is lightweight and streamlined, with lots of good freshness and tart plum, sour cherry and redcurrant. The intensity is mild and the wine remains lean throughout, but that is precisely the high-elevation style brought forward so successfully here. There is a lovely sense of transparency and energy. I Fabbri's Susanna Grassi came back to her family winery because of her love for the land, and she's put everything she has into making her wines clear expressions of her terroirs. The farming and the winemaking of course, but even the bottlings focus on the terroir: the lower altitude vineyards (which give more substantial, more structured wines) are bottled on their own; the highest altitude vines (which make the light, pure Chianti Classico of your spaghetti and meatball dreams) are bottled in her "Lamole" wine.
