Carricante from one small plot in Milo, on Etna's eastern flank. Part of the vineyard grows on its own roots rather than American rootstock, planted from cuttings using the old Etna technique called "magliuoli." Salvo Foti's I Vigneri takes its name from the Maestranzi dei Vigneri, an association of vineyard workers that shaped Etna's wine culture as far back as 1435. He spent more than 20 years building up the massal selection of Carricante for this parcel, then planted it in 2010 as traditional Etna bush vines on chestnut posts. The soil is sandy volcanic "ripiddu" (lapilli and pumice thrown out by eruptions) sitting on a lava plateau of yellow tuffs and red-brown lahars. The cellar work is old-school too: racking and bottling timed to the phases of the moon. The whole vineyard is just under a hectare, roughly 6,000 vines in all. Foti called 2024 an excellent vintage on Etna. Vines stressed by drought recovered after rain in late September and finished ripening 10–15 days early, though production fell across the mountain.

"The 2024 Etna Bianco Superiore Vignadimilo presents understated aromatics of white peach, wildflowers and dusty stone. The palate is pure yet complex as crisp orchard fruits and sour citrus meet crunchy, saline minerality. The close is long and youthfully structured with inner florals and a lemony concentration." —Eric Guido

More about I Vigneri (Salvo Foti)

Salvo Foti is Etna's conscience and poet. His I Vigneri project resurrects the 1435 guild of vineyard workers and spans thirty-plus hectares of rehabilitated hundred-year-old vines planted alberello-style by hand. 'Human wines produced by People for People with respect for People and the Environment'—that's not marketing, that's his actual winemaking bible. Revolutionary Etna, made right.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled swordfish with lemon, capers and oregano; crudo of Sicilian red prawns; pasta con le sarde; whole roasted branzino with fennel; fritto misto of squid and anchovies.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Etna Bianco Superiore profile from Milo: lemon, green apple and white flowers with a hint of fennel, over a smoky, saline volcanic minerality. Medium-bodied with bright, high acidity (think the tension of a good Chablis), it typically finishes dry, long and savoury.
