This is Salvo Foti's own vineyard: a plot of 100-plus-year-old bush vines on Etna's north side, about 0.38 hectares, and it can only be worked by hand or by mule. Vinupetra means "wine from a land full of stones" in Sicilian dialect, and the name is literal. The vines grow in broken-down lava mixed with sand, trained as free-standing alberello on chestnut posts, in a climate that behaves more like northern Italy than Sicily, with harsh winters and big swings between day and night. Because the vines are so old, the plot works like a living archive. It holds different strains of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, some Alicante (Grenache), and a few vines known only as "Francisi," because nobody knows what variety they are or where they came from. Jules Dressner, from the team that imports these wines, once called it one of the five best vineyards he'd ever seen. Salvo's report on 2024 is a happy one: well-timed rain helped the vines recover from summer heat, and the wide day-night swings stretched ripening into early October, so the grapes came in healthy. Production averages around 3,100 bottles, so this is Etna at its most handmade, and well worth grabbing when you see it.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Etna Rosso Vinupetra presents a remarkably pretty bouquet of rose petals, violets, split pine, wet stone and wild strawberry. It’s soft-textured with a mineral tinge up front. Crisp wild berry fruits gain a contrast of sour citrus toward the close. The conclusion is long, staining and fresh with crunchy tannins and a tart raspberry twang." —Eric Guido

More about I Vigneri (Salvo Foti)

Salvo Foti is Etna's conscience and poet. His I Vigneri project resurrects the 1435 guild of vineyard workers and spans thirty-plus hectares of rehabilitated hundred-year-old vines planted alberello-style by hand. 'Human wines produced by People for People with respect for People and the Environment'—that's not marketing, that's his actual winemaking bible. Revolutionary Etna, made right.
