The shortcut into Bartolo Mascarello, one of traditional Barolo's most worshipped estates, and made in limited quantity. It sits between the house's entry-level bottlings and the Barolo: not Barolo, but Nebbiolo grown just outside the appellation in the wider Langhe, from young vines, and given the same old-school treatment — very low yields, native-yeast fermentation in the estate's old cement vats, then large neutral botti. This is the house that answered the barrique craze of the 1990s with a hand-drawn label reading "No Barriques, No Berlusconi"; Bartolo called himself the last of the Mohicans, and since 2005 his daughter Maria Teresa has made the wines exactly as he did, with a little more polish. If you've ever wanted to know what the fuss is about without waiting a decade for a Barolo to come around, start here.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is a fine entry-level offering from Maria Teresa Mascarello. It shows good depth, along with slightly nervy tannins that suggest a year or two in bottle will be beneficial. Crushed red berry fruit, chalk, white pepper and spice resonate on the finish." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"This wine is made with non-estate Nebbiolo sourced from the Barbaresco area. Maria Teresa Mascarello has been buying from the same family near Alba for 20 years, and the two parties enjoy a tight relationship. The Bartolo Mascarello 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo shows great freshness and an elegant style with very finely textured tannins. This wine ages in Slavonian oak for 22 months. Fermentation for this wine, along with the Barbera, Dolcetto and Freisa, is completed to dryness with inoculated yeasts in cement. Some skin contact is implemented, but stronger cap management methods like punch-downs never happen. Instead of breaking the cap, the winery team likes to keep it wet or infused." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

"Pale, youthful crimson. Gorgeous, deep nose, almost explosive in its savoury minerality. Salty, savoury cherry fruit with a layer of fine, long tannins. Transparent."

Decanter

93 points

"Made from purchased fruit from the township of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, this could easily be mistaken for a Barbaresco in 2022. Despite being midweight, there is perceptible density and substance. Pretty raspberry, cherry and violet build with intensity, bringing in hazelnut and citrussy herbs. Chalky minerals fuse into the long, suede-like tannins. Approachable now – but not an easygoing Langhe Nebbiolo. As the vintage yielded small berries with thick skins, the wine was given a brief post-fermentation maceration for a total of 13 days of skin contact."

Kerin O'Keefe

"Rose petal, blood orange and white pepper aromas form the nose on the lovely 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo from Bartolo Mascarello. On the savory, linear palate, fresh acidity and lithe tannins accompany succulent strawberry, red cherry and white pepper. Drink through 2027." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.
