Bricco delle Viole is Vajra's crown jewel, from the highest vineyard in the comune of Barolo, climbing to 480 meters on the cool ridge above Vergne. The altitude is the whole story here: it gives the wine soaring perfume, freshness and serious aging structure. The 2013 was a classic, firmly structured Barolo vintage that rewards patience. At a decade-plus it is opening into its mature stride but still has a long life ahead; decant generously if you are drinking it now.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2013 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a real head-turner. Sweet, perfumed, vivid and exceptionally beautiful, the 2013 is simply stunning. A wine of exceptional finesse and sensuality, the 2013 hits all the right notes. Today, the 2013 reminds me of the 2008, but with more depth, density and creaminess - especially through the middle - and slightly redder fruit tones." —Antonio Galloni

Decanter

"July through to September saw large diurnal differences, with warm days turning to chilly nights and the harvest extended until October 29. I agree with Francesca that 2013 isn't a rock star; instead it's a classical music virtuoso. Despite a gorgeous nose of spice, floral potpourri and perfumed herbs, the palate is still closed. It's profound and layered, with plenty of ripe yet commanding tannin. This will take time to blossom."

Wine Spectator

"Pretty berry and cherry aromas and flavors ply the supple texture in this tight-knit, stylish red. Tobacco, eucalyptus and iron accents add depth, with vibrant structure keeping this focused and lively on the finish."

More about G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra was founded in 1972 by Aldo Vajra, who had taken over his family's farm in Vergne, the highest village in the commune of Barolo, a few years earlier. He was a pioneer of organic farming in Piedmont, certified in 1971, decades before it became fashionable. The flagship is Barolo Bricco delle Viole, a high, cool site that gives perfumed, finely etched Nebbiolo, and the rest of the range, from Langhe Nebbiolo to Dolcetto, is made with the same care.
